Day 2 and all are excited

Day 2 saw all bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for the next steps. The next step involved putting the frame together. This was quite fun as really it is just a big jigsaw puzzle. We soon learnt that with 20+ pieces that it is important to number each piece to save headaches later when it makes it harder to know which bit goes where.

Whilst some were using the jig to align and glue their boards, others were sanding their decks and bottoms from the previous day. Now you could see the board and colours coming to life.

After sanding and preparing the wood, it was literally all hands on deck to glue it all into place.

Finally a board is taking shape

  1. Very interesting, looking from the fisrt picture it looks like the ply frame was cut using a C&C Machine from a computer generated program. The using of cable ties while gluing is something I have not thought of, but also interesting. The lamination of the boards is a typical action, but the fibre glassing of the boards looks like its happening a bit prematurly. Unsure if your sequence is a little out in comparrison to general surfboard building.

  2. A Ha, I see you laminate the boards using resin and glass instead of gluing the edges of the boards and using a multitude of sash clamps. I have noted wooden board builders using palonia to keep weight down and only glassing after the board was completed. Sealing the timber inside the hull was done by pouring resin into the hollow through the bung and rotating the board. After which any excess resin was poured out. (slow batch)
