In the beginning god created... Day 1 of course

Welcome to the first install of the Hollow Wooden Surboard Making course run by Fremantle School of Fine Furniture, Australia.

Day 1 - Saturday
Arriving at 9am, everyone was excited about the journey that lay ahead- the ultimate surfers fantasy - to make and ride their own board.

After roll call (of which we soon realised that there were four people with the name Jason!!), we did the most important part of the whole course - choosing what style of deck and bottom for each person. Whilst most of the boards are very similar in shape, this part of the process provided each board builder the choose of personal style and taste.Overall the styles each person chose was unique and will definately turn heads in and out of the water.

After we chose the style of our decks and bottoms, the next step was to prepare the wood for fiberglassing. This included taping the underbelly then sticking the joins with masking tape. After this was done, a sheet of fiberglass matting was laid over it and then an epoxy resin was poured over the top. This process not only bound the wood together but also waterproofed the wood as well.
